Build Quality and Design

It is apparent that Sagem was not going for the slim and thin design with the my301X because it is almost as fat as its earlier candybar siblings, but the larger size makes it easier to grip and use the phone comfortably.

And thumbs up to Sagem for having large buttons and a big five-way navigation pad on the phone because most phone manufacturers these days forego practicality for style.

However, the placement of the charge/sync slot on the side of the phone makes using the phone awkward while it is being charged or when it is connected to a PC. There is no advantage in moving it to the side of the phone and it should be at the bottom as it has always been.

The screen which displays 65,536 colours at 128 x 128pixel resolution is sharp but isn’t hardly anything to shout about.

Overall, the phone has a sleek, professional look, and the black-and-white design is quite attractive.

Tiny memory

The my301X comes with a variety of ringtones, wallpapers and screensavers, and the phone’s tiny 3.2MB internal memory doesn’t leave space for adding much more.

However, even with the little memory it has, it is able to store up to 1,021 contacts (including e-mail addresses, company name, address and comments), 1,499 events, 127 tasks and 100 messages.

And because the phone doesn’t have a digicam, the tiny internal memory is not a big issue.

Multimedia and Software

Additional MIDI, MP3 or WAV ringtones, wallpapers and screensavers can be downloaded through its WAP browser or copied from another phone via Bluetooth or infrared.

The bundled Wellphone phone management software doesn’t allow uploading of ringtones and logos from PC to phone.

However, users can download the free My Picture and Sound (MPAS) utility from www.winningmobile.com.my/downloads.php for that purpose.

Using Wellphone, users can manage their contacts, events, tasks and data directly through a PC. The software can synchronise the data with Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express or Lotus Notes via infrared, Bluetooth or cable (not included).

And the phone’s organiser even allows users to record voice memos, which are sometimes a lot easier to do than typing a long note.

The software also allows users to dial up to the Internet or send and receive POP3 e-mail messages by using the phone as a modem.

For entertainment, the my301X includes two Java games, Siberian Strike and Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

There is also a calculator and currency converter, which is found in almost all phones.

Network Configuration

CONFIGURING WAP, GPRS and MMS settings on the my301X was a breeze because it was just a matter of selecting and activating the right profile.

There are profiles for postpaid Celcom, Maxis and DiGi but GPRS and MMS settings for prepaid Celcom are omitted.

This will be a problem to users because the postpaid Celcom GPRS access point name (APN) is “wap.celcom.net.my” but the prepaid line uses just “celcom.”

When I used a prepaid Celcom account, I was unable to access WAP over GPRS and could not send or receive MMS until I manually configured the APN.

Because Maxis and DiGi use the same settings for both their prepaid and postpaid accounts, their profiles will work for both postpaid and prepaid accounts.

Conclusion

Because the my301X doesn’t come with a built-in digicam and has little memory, the phone is not for those who like to use their phone to snap pictures or play MP3 music.

However, it is ideal for those looking for a budget phone with excellent wireless connectivity and plenty of features.

Besides the odd location of the charge/synch port and tiny internal memory, there is little not to like about it.

And for the RM599 you pay, it even comes with a Sagem Bluetooth headset.

Pros: Affordable user friendly Bluetooth and infrared

Cons: Unusual location for charge/sync port tiny internal memory.
